Obituary of Betty Jean Schropp

Betty Jean Schropp, 78 of rural Oxford, Iowa died at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 20, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at the Oxford United Methodist Church with the Reverend Diane Townsley officiating. Burial will be at the Oxford Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her memory to Iowa City Hospice. Betty Jean Hummer was born February 23, 1928, on a farm near Williamsburg, Iowa the daughter of Ira and Helen (Goss) Hummer. She married Donald Schropp on March 25, 1946, in Marengo. The couple has farmed near Oxford for many years; she also worked for Amana Refrigeration in Amana for over thirty years before her retirement. She will be remembered for going to auctions, playing bingo, cooking for family and friends, but most of all she loved and cared for her family as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family includes her husband, Donald; son, Jerry Schropp and his wife, Tara of New London; daughter, Bonnie Koenighain and her husband, Vern of Oxford; five grandchildren, Mike Koenighain of Oxford, Chad Koenighain and his wife, Stacy of Oxford, Alexander Schropp of Denton, TX, April Cornell and her husband, Danny of New London, and Corina Schropp of New London; six great-grandchildren, Blake, Lindsay, Zoe, Cayson, Sammy, and Lincoln; brother, Vincent “Fritz” Hummer and his wife, Dorothy of Oakdale, CA; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Ira “Buster” Hummer Jr., Kenneth “Tobe” Hummer, and Ronald “Buck” Hummer. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Oxford and Iowa City is caring for Betty’s family and her services.
