Obituary of Shirley Frees
Shirley Frees 77, of rural Oxford died at her home, Monday, January 30, 2017.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford, with burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Monday at the Oxford Chapel of Gay & Ciha Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her memory. Shirley Nash was born June 16, 1939, in Iowa City, the daughter of Vern and Helen (Gilroy) Nash. She was united in marriage to Marvin W. Frees on February 13, 1961. The couple made their home in this area where Shirley has worked over the years at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Dillard’s, and most recently Homestead Café where she retired from. To say that Shirley was an Elvis fan is an understatement! In addition to Elvis she enjoyed long car rides, dancing, playing Yahtzee, someone else’s home cooked meals and simply being with her family.
Her family includes her children, Linda Whitney (Bob), Jimmy Frees, Kenny Frees, and Peggy Slade (Tim); grandchildren, Tasha Franks, Tanya Franks, Ashley Frees, Heather Frees and Corey Whitney; 12 great-grandchildren and her brother, Bill Nash (Colleen).
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, grandson, Johnie Frees; siblings, Don Kline, Gene Kline and Marilyn Fuhrmann.
