Obituary of Barbara A. Hermeier

Barbara A. Hermeier, age 85, of Iowa City, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2026 at Bickford Cottage in Iowa City.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service.  Burial will be immediately following at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Born on December 30, 1940, in Clinton County Iowa, Barb was the daughter of Morris and Grace Hayes.  She graduated from Calamus Wheatland Secondary Attendance Center in 1958.  Barbara attended college at the University of Iowa, Coe College, University of Northern Iowa and University of Northern Colorado where she received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education.    

She was united in marriage to Wayne Hermeier on August 17, 1963 in Calamus, Iowa. Her professional life was defined by service and education; she taught elementary school in Iowa City, Solon, and Lowden from 1960 to 1984.  Following her teaching career, she worked in various departments, including Linguistics and Physics, at the University of Iowa from 1985 until her retirement in 2008.

Barb loved flowers and enjoyed tending to her gardens and indoor plants.  Most recently she liked reading and spending time working on genealogy. She was a collector of many things.

Barb family includes her husband, Wayne; her son, Lance Hermeier of Iowa City; a brother, Dr. William Hayes; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Lawrence Hayes.
