Obituary of Phyllis J. Sladek
Phyllis J. Sladek, age 97 resident of Johnson County died Saturday, June 27, 2026.
Phyllis J. Meade was born February 5, 1929, near Cosgrove, Iowa, the daughter of Emmett and Beatrice (Donohoe) Meade. She attended Solon schools, graduating with the Class of 1947 from Solon High School. She was united in marriage to Ralph C. Sladek on December 30, 1947, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. The couple farmed east of Iowa City. Phyllis also worked in the Business Office at UIHC for over 39 years.
The world has lost a bright light. Phyllis was known for her constant smile and laughter, her bright blue eyes, her hospitality, her love of family, and perhaps most of all, her love of talking to people. She never met a stranger, her home and heart were open to all, and she fed many who needed a meal. She loved to dance, but most of all, she fiercely loved her family and was always there for us. Phyllis was deeply faithful, praying her rosaries daily and devoted to the Blessed Mother. We miss her deeply.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Kay Evans and her children Brian Evans (Jen) and Cheri Sudbay (John) and Susan Leiser (James) and their children, Wesley Leiser (Dawn) and Amy Vega (Jason); ten great grandchildren, Cheyanne, Skyler, Zadie, Jason, JT, Tony, Jimmy,\ Kailey, Austin, Athena and four great great grandchildren, Kaicen, Antonio, Enzio and Denver and by her sister-in-law, Charlene Williams as well as many cousins and friends in the community.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her adoring husband Ralph C. Sladek, her beloved daughters Baby Bea and Debbie and beloved son Don.
Funeral services will be held 2 pm, Saturday, September 5, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hills, with burial at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. Visitation will be from 1 until the time of the service.
