Obituary of Marcus John Porter

Marcus "Crunch" John Porter, of Waterloo, Iowa, died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on July 1, 2026.

Marcus was born on May 20, 1983, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Roy and Patty Porter. He graduated from Union High School in La Porte City with the Class of 2002, where he proudly participated in football, basketball, and baseball. Although many knew him for his big heart, contagious smile but his height was a given, few forgot the remarkable growth spurt that took him from 5'7" at the beginning of eighth grade to 6'4" by the end of the school year. His love of sports remained with him throughout his life, and he was a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He shared his lifelong love of the Chicago Cubs with his Grandma Lynch.

Following high school, Marcus built a career through hard work and dedication. He worked for Hoffman & Hoffman Trenching and Gaylord's Trenching, earning the respect of coworkers and friends alike. He took great pride in working with his hands and embodied the values of a true blue-collar worker. His strong work ethic and willingness to help wherever needed were qualities admired by everyone who knew him.

Marcus was married on April 28, 2007, to Brittany Voshell. Together they had their daughter Kiley Kay. They would later divorce but moving forward they put their daughter first and provided her with two great parents. His greatest joy in life was his daughter, Kiley Kay Voshell, lovingly known as his "two-foot." She was the light of his life, and everything he did was with her in mind. One of Kiley's favorite memories was receiving a battery-powered Jeep from her dad. As she watched him put air in one of his vehicle's tires, she grabbed the air hose and tried to put air in the tire of her little Jeep. It was a simple, cherished moment that perfectly reflected the special bond they shared. Marcus's love for Kiley was unwavering and will continue to live on through her.

Crunch never met a stranger. He was outgoing, quick with a joke, and had an easygoing spirit that could brighten any room. He was also known for his incredible barbecue skills, especially his rib tips, which became a favorite among family and friends.

In recent years, Marcus discovered a passion for disc golf. When he wasn't on the course, he could often be found working in his garage or enjoying the freedom of riding his motorcycle. He also never turned down a perfectly cooked ribeye steak from Texas Roadhouse.

Marcus was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Janesville and the Moose Lodge. He was also a proud supporter of the Keep Fighting On Suicide Awareness Group, believing deeply in the importance of helping others.

Marcus will be remembered for his heart of gold, his generous spirit, and his willingness to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. His compassion for others continued even after his passing through the gift of organ donation, allowing his legacy of helping others to live on.

Marcus’s family includes his daughter, Kiley Kay Voshell; his parents, Roy and Patty Porter; his brother, Glen Porter (Kelly); his sisters, Stacie Jo Henry (Steve) and Jessica Porter; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and countless friends who became family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved dog, Diamond; his grandparents, Grandma and Grandpa Lynch and Grandma and Grandpa Porter; his uncles, Robert "Bob" Lynch, John Porter, and Bobby Porter; and his best friend, Anthony Gile.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Janesville Riviera-Roose Events Center.

A motorcycle ride honoring Marcus will depart from Raging Ryno's in Cedar Rapids on July 31. Riders should gather at 1:30 p.m., with kickstands up at 2:00 p.m., as they bring MJ home one final time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Kiley Voshell P.O. Box 271, Janesville, IA 50647.
